Aug 16, 2018 (newstodate): Norway's exporters of seafood are keeping a vigilant eye on India - but the market remains a minor outlet for salmon.
Until week 32 ending August 12, 2018, Norway had exported only 105 tonnes of fresh salmon to India, which was, though, an increase over the same period in 2017 when 44 tonnes landed on Indian shelves and tables.
But in the future, Norwegian salmon may find IKEA a useful playmate: Ikea has opened its first 40,000 sq m warehouse in Hyderabad, and plans are to launch 25 similar warehouses in India over the coming few years - all with Norwegian salmon on the menu, of course alongside the global Kotbullar..
Once fully developed, restaurants in Ikea's Indian warehouses would potentially be serving up to 11 mio salmon dishes, adding a boost to Norway's efforts to raise export volumes to this large market.
-No doubt: fresh salmon is the future for Indian imports of Norwegian salmon, Yogi Shergill, Norwegian Vice Consul and Norwegian Seafood Council Director India, told newstodate as reported on June 2, 2017.
Norway's salmon exports to India are well positioned to reach Air India's flights between Delhi and Stockholm, in Sweden, since August 15, 2017, and the carrier's flights between Delhi and Copenhagen, Denmark, from September 16, 2017.
