Aug 29, 2018 (newstodate): Latvia's Riga Airport experienced a growth in cargo volumes by no less than 30.8 percent, y-o-y, to 16,319 tonnes in January-July 2018.
One of the drivers behind this year's boost in volumes is e-trade shipments through the airport, handled by Post Latvia.
-The e-shipments started to grow in volumes in the latter part of 2017, and this business has since continued to increase, says Andris Eglajs, Post Latvia Head of International Business Development.
-Now, this is a highly volatile business so we cannot know exactly how it will develop in the future. But it is without any doubt an important segment that calls for our attention, benefiting from a close cooperation between airport, customs, agents, handling companies and Post Latvia.
-The incoming e-trade shipments are almost entirely destined for onward transiting to Russia and other CIS markets and trucked from Riga across the border. They arrive by an array of freighters including large Boeing 747 freighters from various airlines as chartered from the Chinese exporters.
-As the business unfolds now, we are fully capable of handling the volumes at our existing premises, while we can also occasionally utilize the terminals of other parties at and around Riga Airport.
-Should the business model develop further to require other value-added services like storage, pick-and-pack and logistics, we would of course need to consider the construction of new facilities, but this is certainly not on the agenda as of now, says Mr Eglajs.
