Aug 14, 2018 (newstodate): The project for a new seafood terminal at Oslo Airport took a significant step forward today with the announcement of the operator of the coming new facility.
Avinor has thus signed a MoU with WFS to operate the new terminal slated to be commissioned in 2021.
According to plans, construction works will start in April 2019 after a series of tenders, and the new terminal will be designed with a capacity of handling up to 300,000 tonnes of perishables annually.
In 2017, about 185,00 tonnes of cargo was lifted from Oslo Airport including some 90,000 tonnes of seafood.
The country's total export of seafood by air transportation was, however, almost 230,000 tonnes, so only about 39 percent of this volume thus left Oslo Airport by air while the bulk of this export was still trucked out of the country for uplift from other airports including Helsinki, Copenhagen and a number of UK and continental airports.
The driving motive behind the coming new Avinor seafood terminal is thus to rise the share of seafood exports flown directly out of the country in cooperation with airlines, forwarders and exporters.
Today, 14 airlines carry seafood shipments from Oslo Airport, with more to follow including Ethiopian Airlines with a new route to Guangzhou from September 2018 and a planned route by Saudia Cargo to the USA still under negotiation.
