Aug 10, 2018 (newstodate): Construction of a cargo center at the new Moscow Ramenskoye Zhukovsky Airport will be completed in Autumn 2018.
The coming new facility, to be commissioned already before the end of this year, will have the capacity of handling up to 100,000 tonnes of cargo annually.
Work is also progressing on construction of a freighter-dedicated 82,000 sq m apron allowing for simultaneous parking of four wide-body aircraft or six narrow-body Airbus 320/Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
This project is slated for commissioning in early 2019.
The airport was officially opened only on May 30, 2016, as the fourth international airport to serve the Moscow area and relieve the pressure on the existing capital airport complex.
Ramenskoye Zhukovsky Airport has two runways, one of which is the longest in Europe - 5,400m.
Lithuania's Avia Solutions Group holds 75 percent of the stake in the JV controlling Zhukovsky Airport.
Zhukovsky Airport was originally selected by the country's newcomer to the cargo industry, Sky Gates Airlines to serve as its hub for the coming Boeing 747-400F freighter fleet starting operations from October 2016, but the carrier decided to move operations instead to Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport as Zhukovsky did still not provide the pertinent cargo terminal infrastructure at the time.
For the same reason, another cargo carrier Aviastar-TU with a fleet comprising three TU-204F aircraft also decided to allocate its operations to Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo instead of Zhukovsky, as originally planned.
Time will now show if Zhukovsky Airport will be able to convince these carriers to reconsider their choice.
