Jul 06, 2018 (newstodate): During the first half of 2018, Norway's exports of fresh salmon to China grew by no less than 695 percent, y-o-y.
A total of 6,334 tonnes of salmon was thus sent to the Chinese market, but the explosive growth should of course be considered in the light of China's ban on Norwegian seafood since 2010 and lifted only gradually from Spring 2018.
And the volumes are still a far cry from the levels exported to China in earlier days.
Before 2010, Norway provided some 90 percent of China's fresh salmon imports, but this proportion came to a full stop as far as direct imports are concerned.
Until spring 2018, most of the Norwegian salmon export that did reach the Chinese market was transited through Vietnam from where shipments were trucked over the border, basically as an illegal trade.
This has now been stopped, and volumes to Vietnam consequently dropped to only 71 tonnes in week 26, 2018, against 390 tonnes in week 26, 2017.
Up to and including week 26, 2018, Hong Kong has imported 8,067 tonnes of Norwegian salmon, and Taiwan took 4,068 tonnes.
