Jun 04, 2018 (newstodate): With air cargo services to more than 300 destinations in 121 countries and 85 direct cargo destinations, Turkish Cargo relies on an efficient cargo hub for its operations.
This will be realized with the coming new Istanbul Airport, to be officially opened by the end of October 2018.
The coming new cargo facility will cover 165,000 sq m and have the capacity of handling up to four million tonnes of cargo annually when fully expanded.
With the imminent completion of phase one, the cargo capacity will be two million tonnes annually, seen against Turkish Cargo's total volumes carried in 2017 at 1,130,000 tonnes.
Tunnels will connect the cargo terminal with the apron positions to avoid cargo transportation on the tarmac, and dedicated freighter parking positions will be available directly adjoining the cargo terminal.
6,600 sq m of floor space will be dedicated to handling of perishables, 2,00 sq m will be dedicated to express cargo handling, VALS will be handled at 1,000 sq m, 500 sq m will be dedicated to handling of live animals, and 7,000 sq m will be dedicated to handling of general cargo, with a high level of automatization.
-Plans by Turkish Cargo are to initially keep the handling of all freighters at the current position at Istanbul Ataturk Airport when the new airport is commissioned by the end of October 2018, Turhan Ozen, Turkish Airlines CCO & Chief Cargo Officer, earlier told newstodate.
-From the start, all passenger aircraft operations will move to the new airport, and handling of belly cargo and freighter cargo will thus be kept apart until mid-2019 when our freighter operations will move to the new airport as well, finally having all cargo operations within the same infrastructure, Mr Ozen said.
