Jun 14, 2018 (newstodate): The Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport is seeing a significant growth in cargo volumes in 2018.
In the first five months of this year, the airport has handled a total of 670 tonnes of cargo which is 228 percent up on last year.
Mail volumes handled in January-May 2018 were also up, albeit more modestly, by 3.6 percent, y-o-y, to 109 tonnes.
In May 2018 alone the airport handled 155.7 tonnes of cargo and 24.1 tonnes of mail which was an increase by 232.7 and 8 percent, respectively.
Introducing competition in the market, SAS started operating the route between Vagar and Copenhagen from March 26, 2017, with a total of 12 weekly flights with Airbus A320 aircraft, in competition to Atlantic Airways that had so far been alone on the route with a daily rotation.
