Jun 15, 2018 (newstodate): After three years of operating its route to Hong Kong from Stockholm, Sweden, SAS will move the operation to Copenhagen, in Denmark, from September 30, 2018.
SAS opened its Hong Kong-route from Stockholm on September 10, 2015, but with booking figures lower than expected and boosted by Sweden's recent introduction of a tax on passengers on intercontinental flights, the decision was to move the route to Copenhagen that is already SAS' largest base for intercontinental flights.
Star Alliance carrier SAS will be offering five weekly Airbus A340-300 rotations between Copenhagen and Hong Kong.
SAS will then be competing head-on with the oneworld member-carrier Cathay Pacific that since May 1, 2018, is offering three weekly rotations on the route with Airbus A350 aircraft.
But while Cathay Pacific is so far operating the route on a seasonal base only, ending flights prior to the launch of SAS' services, the Scandinavian carrier will provide year-round flights.
SAS last served Hong Kong with flights from Copenhagen Airport, in Denmark, until 2004.
