Jun 20, 2018 (newstodate): As of May 2018, Norway has exported 5,400 tonnes of fresh whole salmon to China.
But volumes would rise even higher if all production sites in Norway were certified for exports to China. Today, some of the crucial production sites with large production potentials remain barred from the trade.
-Troms, Nordland and Sor Trondelag are still suspended from exporting whole salmon from Norway to China, says Victoria Braathen, Seafood Council Director China, based in Shanghai and taking over this summer from Sigmund Bjoergo who held the office for seven years.
-There is ongoing dialogue between Norwegian and Chinese authorities to improve access for Norwegian seafood to the Chinese market, but these processes take time, says Ms Braathen.
Norway cannot export salmon to China that are under suspicion of, or proved to be infected with Pancreas Disease or Infectious salmon anemia.
This of course puts limits on the quantities of salmon available for export to China.
