Jun 25, 2018 (newstodate): When new concessionaires take over the management of Norway's Haugesund Karmoy Airport from the start of 2019, the business case will include air cargo.
-We are already into talks on this issue and we will definitely include cargo operations, especially targeting Norway's demand for seafood uplift capacity, says Martin Laurhammer, General Manager of one of the airport's coming new operators, Lufthavnsutbyggning AS.
-With the runway length at 2,120m, we will not be able to operate large freighters such as Boeing 747 or Airbus A330 without a weight penalty, but there will still be ample business opportunities for cargo uplift with smaller freighter such as the Boeing 757.
-Besides seafood, there is also a large industrial production in the region which requires shipments of machinery and spares, and we are also seeing potentials in synergies from cooperation with the nearby Haugesund Harbor.
-The challenge will be to cover up for the imbalance in imports and exports, but the region's e-trade commodities may contribute on the import side to improve the profitability of a freighter service.
-Talks will be conducted already from this autumn, and I am quite optimistic that cargo be one of the drivers in the development of Haugesund Karmoy Airport, says Mr Laurhammer.
Already in 2009, plans driven by Martin Laurhammer emerged for turning Norway's Haugesund Karmoy Airport into a new center for uplift of fresh salmon exports shipments to the US market.
Following a tender process, Avinor has selected the Norwegian development organization, Lufthavnsutbyggning AS in cooperation with the Norwegian regional airline Wideroe as concessionaires to operate the state-owned airport for a 20-year period from start of 2019.
