Jun 06, 2018 (newstodate): May 2018 brought little over-all growth in cargo volumes at Finnair Cargo.
The total volumes carried were thus down 0.1 percent, y-o-y, to 13,604 tonnes, despite a sound growth in the Asian market, up 13.7 percent, and even in the North Atlantic market, up 12.4 percent.
Cargo on scheduled passenger traffic was thus up 6.6 percent, y-o-y, to 12,697 tonnes in May 2018.
In the other direction, cargo on freighter traffic was down 47.1 percent, now generated only by the three weekly freighter flights between Helsinki and Brussels, operated by DHL after the suspension of the capacity agreement with Japan Airlines.
Curiously, Finnair itself cites a "good cargo market development in the Nordic countries" as one driver of growth, while statistics show an over-all drop by 20.6 percent, y-o-y, in the European cargo segment.
During the first five months of 2018, Finnair Cargo has transported a total of 56,937 tonnes of cargo, down 1.8 percent on last year.
Again, the Asian traffic remains crucial contributing 75 percent of the total volumes and increasing by 17 percent in the period.
Increased capacity also overtook sold volumes as the over-all cargo load factor was down 9.3 percentage-points.
