Jun 26, 2018 (newstodate): At long last, Norwegian seafood exporters have got direct non-stop uplift capacity for shipments to China.
Sort of, at least...
With the first flight on June 12, 2018, Marine Harvest's Scottish subsidiary sent three tonnes of fresh salmon on the Chinese carrier Hainan Airlines' inaugural passenger flight from Edinburgh to Beijing.
The carrier is now offering two weekly rotations on the route.
Until now, Marine Harvest has trucked its China-bound shipments into London Heathrow Airport for direct or indirect flights to China, one its top four export markets that generated sale of 3,500 tonnes of salmon in 2017.
In the meantime, exporters of Norwegian seafood are still hoping for opening of direct flights between Oslo and destinations in China, which would probably entail flights by a Chinese carrier as access by Norwegian or Scandinavian carriers to the Sibir air lanes is still strictly limited by the existing air services agreement between Russia and Scandinavia that allows for only one designated carrier - in the case of Scandinavia: SAS that has no plans for direct non-stop flights to China from Norway.
