Jun 27, 2018 (newstodate): While not included in Greenland's current projects for modernization of its airports infrastructure, the country's main Transatlantic airport at Kangerlussuaq still has an important role to play in the country's infrastructure.
This is at least the opinion aired by two leading business organizations, Arctic Circle Business and GE Sisimiut.
Posted in Greenland media, the two organizations refer to a steady growth in the volumes of passengers through the Atlantic airport, both traveling in, around and out of Greenland, and using the airport as a sea/air transfer hub for cruise tourism.
The two organizations also point to the stable weather conditions at Kangerlussuaq Airport, which secures a high up-time ratio.
This was also substantiated by a report in 2011 by Air Greenland.
According to Air Greenland, the Atlantic traffic at Kangerlussuaq is down only a few times per year due to bad weather, while Atlantic traffic at an airport at Nuuk would be impacted between 18 and 37 times per year, entailing heavy costs for the carrier as flights are then returned to Denmark.
Kangerlussuaq Airport has 24/7/360 days' up-time and a 2,810m runway, and serves also an an alternative airport for Transatlantic ETOPS flights.
