Jun 07, 2018 (newstodate): While driven by the seasonal peak in leisure travel, Finnair's new European routes are highly appraised by the airline's cargo business as well.
-Finnair is significantly expanding capacity for cargo customers in Europe in 2018, adding plenty new frequencies and a new route to Lisbon in 2018, writes Fredrik Wildtgrube, Finnair Cargo Head of Global sales on his Finnair Cargo blog.
-Cargo and passenger traffic are set to benefit as the EU's economic recovery gathers pace. Europe accounted for nearly 20 percent of Finnair Cargos total revenue in 2017.
-Flights to the Iberian Peninsula in summer 2018 get a special boost, with a weekly offering of four flights to Lisbon, ten to Madrid, 18 to Barcelona and one extra to Malaga. The increased capacity and temperature-controlled facilities provided by the COOL Nordic Cargo Hub at Helsinki Airport make it easier and more efficient to transfer loads from flights from Madrid or Barcelona, for example, onto flights heading for Bangkok or Tokyo.
-Finnair has also boosted flight frequency to Stuttgart to daily operations. The German city is the center of the German automotive industry, with Mercedes-Benz and Porsche both headquartered here. Germany was a top-ten origin country in terms of cargo revenue in 2017, writes Mr Wildtgrube.
Finnair Cargo would indeed benefit from a rise in volumes on the European lanes.
Looking into the latest Finnair statistics on air cargo, volumes in the European markets were down by 20.6 percent, y-o-y, in May 2018, and by 24.2 percent during the first five months in 2018.
