Estimates are that airlines will carry some 1.5 mio passengers on 12,500 flights in connection with the World Cup.
Non-Russian airlines submitted applications for more than 3,000 flights during June 13-21 including 2,236 applications for international flights in and out of Russia.
Russia's Ministry of Transportation has also allowed foreign airlines to operate charter flights within Russia during the FIFA World Cup to provide ample uplift for the games.
As one example, SAS has made its debut at Samara Kurumoch International Airport in the Volga Region, bringing in fans from Denmark on a direct Copenhagen-Samara flight using Airbus A320 aircraft greeted with the traditional water cascade upon arrival.
