Jun 26, 2018 (newstodate): The Estonian carrier Nordica is building a strategy to allocate aircraft to stations outside Estonia, with the first base at the Dutch airport of Groningen.
From March 2018, Nordica opened the base at Groningen Airport Eelde aiming at year-round Bombardier CRJ700 flights on five routes to Copenhagen, Munich, Nice and Brussels and to Ibiza during the summer season.
While maintaining the twice-daily rotations on the route from Groningen to Copenhagen, the carrier however had to scrap its plans for the flights from March 25, 2018, between Groningen and Brussels due to lack of response in the market.
The carrier is still operating a daily flight from Groningen to Munich and offers week-end flights from Groningen to Nice and Ibiza.
But the Bombardier CRJ700 now spends idle time on the tarmac at Groningen Airport between flights to Copenhagen and Munich, while efforts to identify a viable alternative to the aborted plans for Brussels-flights have still not produced a result.
Still, Nordica sticks to its plans for opening new bases in Europe.
-I would be very surprised if we don't open up a new base with own aircraft outside Estonia in 2019, Sven Kukemelk, Nordica COO, said to newstodate as reported on May 31, 2018.
