May 14, 2018 (newstodate): Scandinavian carriers may see new business opportunities arising in new air traffic to India.
The Indian government has announced a change in the National Civil Aviation Policy to sign open skies agreements with members of SAARC as well as with other countries outside a 5,000-km radius from Delhi.
The Indian government has however decided to restrict the number of airports in India open for a foreign airline.
Among the first countries responding to this new approach by the Indian government is Sweden, negotiating air services agreements on behalf of all three Scandinavian countries Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
Greece has already concluded an open skies agreement with India, under which Indian carriers can operate any number of flights to any destination while Greek airlines will be allowed to operate flights to six Indian destinations.
Alone in serving the Scandinavian markets with flights to India is today Air India that launched flights to Stockholm from August 15, 2017, and to Copenhagen from September 16, 2017,
SAS last operated flights to India from October 28, 2008, after a prolonged seven-year suspension, but pulled out again already with the last flight on March 2, 2009.
