May 23, 2018 (newstodate): Today, two out of three flights in Russia still connect via the three main airports of Moscow, leading to congestion and prolonged total transportation times for the country's air passengers.
In a report from the country's Center for Strategic Research focusing on the problem, the share of regional flights without a transfer in Moscow can reach 50 percent of total domestic traffic by 2024.
-One of the key areas for increasing the accessibility of Russia's territories is the decentralization of the air transportation route network and acceptable prices for air tickets for passengers, the report says.
The development of regional aviation can be assisted by the creation of federal hub airports, or federal hubs.
According to the calculations taking into account the volume of passenger traffic and the volume of transit, as well as the distance from other major airports, it would be possible to establish such hubs in Yekaterinburg, Samara, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Rostov-on-Don, Krasnodar, Mineralnye Vody, and Kaliningrad.
