May 24, 2018 (newstodate): The air cargo volumes handled at Sweden's three leading cargo airports managed by Swedavia increased in this year's first quarter.
A total of 72,143 tonnes of cargo was handled at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Gothenburg Airport and Malmo Airport - an over-all increase by 7.7 percent, y-o-y.
Leading the industry was Stockholm Arlanda handling 50,627 tonnes of cargo, up no less than 13 percent.
Next came Gothenburg Airport with 15,737 tonnes and also up by 2.5 percent, while Malmo Airport continued to show negative growth by 15.6 percent, to 5,779 tonnes in Q1/2018.
-Stockholm Arlanda is thriving on a sustained increase in belly cargo capacity, thanks not least to newcomers Singapore Airlines from May 30, 2017, and Air India from August 15, 2017, and this positive trend will be further enhanced as China Eastern commences services from June 16, 2018, on the new route between Shanghai, Sweden's top IATA export cargo destination, and Stockholm, says Ylva Arvidsson, Swedavia Director Cargo.
-Starting from May 16, 2018, Korean Air Cargo has introduced the Boeing 747-8F freighter at Stockholm Arlanda, replacing the Boeing 777F, and Turkish Airlines is now serving the route from Istanbul with Airbus A330 aircraft on certain rotations, also boosting the cargo capacity at Stockholm Arlanda.
-Contributing to optimism is the fact that the balance between imports and exports is very attractive, with exports rising by 7.8 percent and imports increasing by 7.6 percent, y-o-y, during Q1, 2018, says Ms Arvidsson.
Malmo Airport remains marked by the suspension of freighter services since November 15, 2016, when AirBridgeCargo Airlines moved its twice-weekly Boeing 747-8F Scandinavian operation from Malmo Airport to Oslo Airport.
