May 31, 2018 (newstodate): Traffic is growing and growing at Iceland's Keflavik Airport, driving the need for further expansion of the infrastructure.
In 1987 the airport terminal covered 23,248 sq.m. In 2001 six air-bridges added 17,024 sq.m, in the years 2004-2007 another 20,534 sq.m. were added, 2015 saw the addition of another 5,428 sq.m., and 2017 brought added space of 7,000 sq.m.
The Keflavik Airport terminal thus now covers 75,216 sq.m. with 12 air-bridges, but even so the need for remote stands is increasing as well beyond the currently 13 aircraft remote parking stands for passenger aircraft plus another six for cargo operators.
Estimates are now that Keflavik Airport will be handling 14.5 mio passengers by 2025, compared to 8.8 mio in 2017.
In this year's summer schedule Keflavik Airport will be served by 28 airlines offering flights to 100 destinations in 30 countries.
In summer 2017, 27 commercial airlines operated flights from Iceland to 78 destinations across Europe and North America compared to flights to 46 destinations in summer 2016, while Keflavik Airport only had flights to 18 destinations in summer 2007.
