May 08, 2018 (newstodate): Finnair Cargo saw total cargo volumes carried in April 2018 up by 1.9 percent, y-o-y, to 12,617 tonnes.
While enjoying a sustained rise in volumes despite a shortfall in all-cargo sales after the abrogation in October 2017 of the contract with Japan Airlines, the carrier's available capacity still outstripped the sold capacity as the carrier expands its fleet.
The rise in volumes was thus caused especially by a strong growth in the Asian segment that saw volumes up by 24.1 tonnes to 9,418 tonnes - almost 75 percent of all cargo transported in April 2018.
In January-April 2018 the Asian segments generated a total of 32,687 tonnes of cargo, up 18.8 percent, y-o-y, and corresponding to another 75 percent of the total volumes lifted.
Boosting Finnair Cargo's outgoing cargo volumes to Asia is the Norwegian salmon export that benefits from shorter trucking times from production sites in northern Norway, compared to trucking times to Oslo Airport.
According to industry sources, some 30 trucks depart every night from Northern Norway to Helsinki Airport with seafood shipments booked for transportation by Finnair and Japan Airlines.
In the North Atlantic segment the carrier saw volumes down by 15.4 percent to 676 tonnes in April, and by 13.3 percent in January-April 2018, to 2,345 tonnes.
Finnair Cargo's European traffic was also down by 14.6 percent in April and by 25.3 percent, y-o-y, in January-April 2018.
