May 30, 2018 (newstodate): A small Danish airport that has not seen scheduled commercial flights since 2007 is considered for a new role serving the seafood industry.
Today, Thisted Airport with a 1,600m asphalted runway is only open for visual flight operations while housing maintenance workshops for the Danish BA-franchise carrier Sun-Air and also performing various maintenance and technical jobs for other civilian and military customers.
The airport is located within five kilometers from Hanstholm Harbor, Denmark's largest facility serving the fishing industry and with frequent scheduled cargo and passenger routes to a number of destinations in the North Atlantic region, and Denmark's largest seafood auction hall.
A group comprising leading stakeholders in the seafood and cargo-related industries as well as representatives from the local business association and the regional government is now working on preparing the groundwork for a feasibility study and a business plan to be presented to private and public investors as a first step towards concrete action to seek cargo operations carrying seafood shipments from the north Atlantic markets into Thisted Airport for sale on the auction, processing at local seafood industries and onward export to European destinations.
The group is now talking to the Danish CAA, Transportstyrelsen, to verify the status of the airport and potentials for reopening flight operations.
