May 22, 2018 (newstodate): Kalaallit Airports, set up by Greenland's government to construct, own and operate the airports in Nuuk, Ilulissat and Qaqortoq, has shortlisted six companies to participate in the coming tender for airport construction projects.
Among these shortlisted companies is one Chinese bidder - China Communications Construction Company.
This has aroused attention beyond Greenland, and not least in Denmark, and the issue will be on the agenda as the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs is in Greenland from today to participate in the celebration of the the Ilulissat Declaration from 2008 in which USA, Russia, Canada, Norway and Denmark agreed to solve all future problems in the Arctics peacefully.
In Denmark there is a growing uneasiness with the prospects of a Chinese company to build and finance Greenland's coming new airport infrastructure.
Drawing on experiences gathered in certain African countries where Chinese contracts has taken virtual control of infrastructure through financial means, this is seen to potentially compromise the geopolitical stability in the Arctic region.
