May 17, 2018 (newstodate): The Polish parliament has given its green light for construction of a new "European Gateway to China" to replace the existing Warsaw Chopin Airport.
To be named Central Communication Port "Solidarnosc", the airport has ambitions to become not only the country's international hub, but also serve as the prime international hub for the neighboring countries, with ambitions to become the prime European gateway to China.
With four runways, the airport will be designed for handling of 45 million passengers per year, with potentials to grow to the capacity of handling up to 100 million passengers.
The design phase is to be completed by the end of 2019, and the ensuing construction phase will take another eight years allowing the new airport to be commissioned by the end of 2027.
Negotiations have been conducted with Chinese investors keen to pour money into the project that will become part of the Chinese geopolitical efforts to boost its global role under the lyrics of "One Belt, One Road."
Close to saturation, the country's Warsaw Chopin Airport handled 15.7 mio passengers in 2017 and is seeing growing traffic as the national airline LOT is amid a process of expansion including the the opening of new intercontinental flights
