May 24, 2018 (newstodate): The Finnish Aviation Museum is looking for a new location as its current lease contract expires in 2022. The former Finnair Cargo terminal is seen as one option.
Finnair Cargo moved out from its former cargo terminal with the opening of the new COOL Terminal in January 2018, but the building soon found new tenants in parts of the location.
Starting from March 1, 2018, ASR Cargo Center became new provider of air cargo handling and cargo terminal services at Helsinki Airport by renting a total area of 3,000 sq m. handling and office space.
And starting from April 19, 2018, another new tenant in the former Finnair Cargo terminal is Swissport Cargo Services.
While details of the plans for the Finnish Aviation Museum are still not settled, neither of the two cargo handling companies fear for their future.
-Our current terminal space is sufficient for us as a start, and if we would need to expand in the future we would have to find another location anyway, says Jaakko Mikkonen, ASR Cargo Center Managing Director.
Swissport Cargo Handling is also quite convinced of its sustained presence in the former Finnair cargo terminal.
-We haven't actually heard much about the said plans for the aviation museum, but even if plans are realized we would still have ample opportunities for expansion, says Tommi Voss, Swissport Finland Director Cargo.
-The museum including part of the apron for exhibiting aircraft would be fenced as part of the landside area and would therefore not interfere with our airside operations, so I do not foresee any problems as far as what is known of the plans today is concerned, says Mr Voss.
