Apr 19, 2018 (newstodate): Poised to become the world's largest airport project, Istanbul's coming new 3rd international airport will be a showcase - also for the air cargo industry.
1.4 mio sq m are dedicated to air cargo at the airport including cargo aircraft parking areas and the Cargo City dedicated to allow simultaneous handling of 35 wide-body freighter aircraft.
The cargo facilities are designed in phases and will have a handling capacity of 2.5 mio tonnes from the start, eventually growing to the capacity of handling up to 5.5 mio tonnes of cargo annually when fully developed.
Contracts have been signed with MNG, PTT, Celebi Ground Handling, HAVAS, Sistem Logistics and Bilin Logistics that are building their own facilities at the Cargo City and Ground Services Campus.
-Plans by Turkish Cargo are to initially keep the handling of all freighters at the current position at Istanbul Ataturk Airport when the new airport is commissioned by the end of October 2018, says Turhan Ozen, Turkish Airlines CCO & Chief Cargo Officer.
-From the start, all passenger aircraft operations will move to the new airport, and handling of belly cargo and freighter cargo will thus be kept apart until mid-2019 when our freighter operations will move to the new airport as well, finally having all cargo operations within the same infrastructure, says Mr Ozen.
The official opening of the new airport is slated for October 29, 2018.
