Apr 24, 2018 (newstodate): Environmentalists can enjoy seeing the first fruits of the successful campaign against air transportation.
The Swedish Transportstyrelsen has now downgraded its prognosis for the country's growth in air transportation from earlier five percent to 2.6 percent in 2018.
Sweden implemented its new tax on air tickets from April 1, 2018, and this is expected to lead to rising air fares in the coming years, driving demand down.
A decline in demand for passenger travel will lead to a corresponding decline in this contribution to yields on flights, threatening the sustainability of operations on certain routes.
Airlines derive some 20 percent of the yields from cargo transportation, so less passenger flights will lead also to a drop in cargo belly capacity.
Norway is now also considering to introduce a tax on passenger air tickets which will potentially threaten the provision of cargo uplift from the country's airports.
