Apr 23, 2018 (newstodate): Latvia's Riga Airport has seen traffic figures booming in this year's Q1.
Passenger volumes have soared by no less than 19.4 percent, y-o-y, to 1.35 mio passengers, while cargo volumes have also been skyrocketing with a 68.2 percent growth during January-March 2018, to 7,932 tonnes.
The growth at Riga Airport is not least driven by its role as a transit hub, as 26.8 percent of the passengers served in the first quarter traveled through Riga in transit.
A total of 362,700 transit and transfer passengers changed aircraft at Riga Airport in the first three months of the year - an increase by 23.4 percent, y-o-y.
While passenger volumes will predictably continue to increase in 2018, the development in the air cargo volumes will, however, slow down as Turkish Cargo relocated its twice-weekly freighter service at Riga Airport to Vilnius Airport from April 19, 2018.
Among the airlines at Riga Airport, airBaltic experienced a growth by 24.6 percent in its passenger figures in Q1 2018 securing a market share at 50.6 percent.
The airport's second-largest airline Ryanair grew its passenger volumes by 4.4 percent, to a market share at 17.1 percent, while the Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air also saw a significant growth at 35.2 percent in Q1, with a share at 10.8 percent of the market.
