Apr 04, 2018 (newstodate): Riga Airport remains optimistic about sustained growth in its air cargo business even after the coming loss of Turkish Cargo's twice-weekly freighter operations.
As reported yesterday, Turkish Cargo will move its freighter operations to Vilnius Airport from April 19, 2018 after nine months of operations at Riga Airport.
-We have received notice from Turkish Cargo that its scheduled flights to Riga will be changed. We hope, though, that at least one weekly frequency will remain on the market, says Liene Freivalde, Riga International Airport Director, Aviation services and business development.
-At the same time, we will facilitate continued growth in air cargo in Riga for all market participants. It needs to be noted that more than 90 percent of all cargo operations are provided by airBaltic and other well-known cargo operators. Therefore, at any scenario Riga airport will remain on the path of positive growth.
-To facilitate the infrastructural needs of Riga airport, a new cargo apron designated for wide-body aircraft will be constructed by the airport authority in 2019, and by 2020 a new air cargo logistics center will become operational.
-As we have stated earlier, Riga Airport is open for new developments on passenger and aviation cargo business, says Ms Freivalde.
In the first two months of this year, the airport has seen cargo volumes up by 72.3 percent, y-o-y, to 5,031 tonnes including the handling of 3,492 tonnes of cargo and 1,536 tonnes of mail.
