Apr 30, 2018 (newstodate): A mix of seasonally lower demand for air travel during the summer and shortage of pilots drives Emirates to temporarily ground a significant part of the fleet.
To be stored at Al Maktoum International Airport in April 2018 are 11 Boeing 777 and one Airbus A380, in May there will be 14 Boeing 777 and six Airbus A380 on the ground, and in June 11 Boeing 777 and three Airbus A380 aircraft.
At a pres conference in Hamburg, Emirates President Sir Tim Clark recently admitted that the carrier is short of pilots, lacking "some 100-150 pilots" which forces it to reduce operations at least until the demand picks up again by September or October.
Lurking on the horizon is Chinese airlines' booming international recruitment drive for foreign pilots that are offered highly profitable employment packages that compete favorably with what European, or even Gulf carriers, offer.
