Apr 17, 2018 (newstodate): While cargo volumes are not exactly booming at Finland's Helsinki Airport in 2018, news abound on the cargo handling side in 2018.
First, on January 8, 2018, Finnair Cargo opened its new cargo handling facility, COOL Terminal at the airport with a strong focus on handling of perishables and pharma shipments as well as handling of other types of cargo.
Next, on March 1, 2018, Aviator Finland and ASR Cargo Center started offering airline customers joint on-airport cargo handling at Helsinki with the opening of the ASR Cargo Terminal in part of the ex-Finnair Cargo terminal at the airport.
Now Swissport Cargo has also expanded its Cargo Terminal capacity at Helsinki Airport offering more space for customers and especially trucking operations.
Helsinki Airport however ended this year's Q1 with a decline in cargo volumes by 1.9 percent, y-o-y, to a total of 41,074 tonnes.
The decline was caused by a drop by 0.6 percent drop in international cargo, to 38,438 tonnes, and a drop in international mail by 12.9 percent to 2,185 tonnes.
Together, international cargo and mail were thus down by 1.3 percent to 40,623 tonnes during January-March 2018.
