Apr 11, 2018 (newstodate): Kalaallit Airports, set up by Greenland's government to construct, own and operate the airports in Nuuk, Ilulissat and Qaqortoq, has shortlisted six companies to participate in the coming tender for airport construction projects.
The six pre-qualified companies include three Danish bidders Aarsleff-Istak, Munck Gruppen, and MT Hojgaard, one Canadian company Pennecon Dexter JV, one Dutch company BAM International - and a Chinese company China Communications Construction Company.
The projects comprise the extension of the runway at the capital airport at Nuuk to 1,800m from today's 950m, the extension of the runway at Ilulissat Airport to 1,800m from today's 845m, and the construction of a new airport at Qaqortoq with a 1,200m runway.
Much debate is, however, focusing on the bid by the Chinese company 4C that is known from projects in Africa with a model including a full package from manpower to financing at favorable state-subsidized loans.
Fears are that an eventual choice of the Chinese bid may compromise Greenland's integrity and be at odds with general western considerations of national security and geopolitical issues concerning Greenland, Denmark and other western interests.
