Mar 08, 2018 (newstodate): Last summer saw an enormous rise in volumes of mail shipments from China into Sweden's Stockholm Arlanda Airport, driven by e-commerce, and described by Swedavia as "a comparatively pleasant problem".
-The traffic, managed by PostNord, is now comprising the handling of up to 100,000 parcels per day, which puts huge stress on all parties involved. Also the current PostNord mail handling terminal is certainly not built for such volumes, and the whole situation is only manageable thanks to close cooperation between airlines, ground and cargo handling agents and PostNord, Bas van Goch, Swedavia General Manager Cargo, told newstodate back in September 2017.
This year things may turn out differently, however.
-Since March 1, 2018, all shipments are subject to VAT and there will be a handling fee of SEK 75, invoiced by PostNord in Sweden. We expect this will lead to a decrease in volumes compared to last year summer, when we were overwhelmed with shipments from China, Mr van Goch now says.
-The coming months will show what the volumes will be under the new rules, he adds.
