Mar 07, 2018 (newstodate): By the end of 2017, the aircraft fleet of the UK/Swedish cargo carrier West Atlantic accounted to 60 aircraft. But almost one-third is standing idle.
With a total of 37 ATP freighters, the carrier has the largest fleet of this type of aircraft. But only 19 are in service, with the 18 standing idle, representing a sustained cost and capital burden.
Efforts are made, therefore, to bring down this number.
According to the company's latest interim report, four aircraft are on their way to a new operator, but while seeking business for the remaining turboprop freighters, West Atlantic is rather to scrap most of them to serve as a pool of spares.
West Atlantic also claims to be one of the largest Boeing 737 freighter operators in Europe, with a fleet totaling 18 Boeing 737-300 and -400 converted freighter, with one more to be delivered in Q1 2018.
Eight of these aircraft are serving under a contract with DHL, and nine are operating under a contract with Royal Mail.
The carrier's fleet also comprises three Boeing 767-200 freighters sourced from its partner, the Ohio-based Air Transport Services Group, ATSG, serving a contract with TNT - and West Atlantic sees high probability to increase the Boeing 767 fleet during 2018.
Finally, West Atlantic is also operating two CRJ200 freighters primarily on postal routes.
