Mar 15, 2018 (newstodate): Cargo volumes recovered in February at Estonia's Tallinn Airport - but the overall picture still indicates a sustained downward slide.
The airport handled a total of 857 tonnes of cargo in February 2018, an increase by 25.1 percent, including 692 tonnes of cargo and 165 tonnes of mail.
At 1,766 tonnes, volumes in January-February 2018 are however still 2.4 percent down on the preceding year.
The airport is working hard to regain its cargo business, with plans for a wide-body freighter service to China in the making, pushed by the Estonian ACMI provider Airest and in cooperation with the airport, Post11 and another partner in the e-commerce, as reported by newstodate yesterday.
Until the global crisis starting in 2008-2009, Tallinn Airport thrived on ex-China imports via Istanbul and transited to Russia via Estonia, clearly out-performing other airports in the Baltic region.
In 2008, Tallinn International Airport thus handled a total of 41,867 tonnes, Latvia's Riga International Airport handled 7,668 tonnes, and Lithuania's Vilnius Intrenational Airport landed at a total of 5,718 tonnes.
