Feb 12, 2018 (newstodate): Swedavia is looking back on a most successful 2017 in terms of cargo growth.
Together, Swedavia's three main cargo airports Stockholm Arlanda, Gothenburg Airport and Malmo Airport handled a total of 275,125 tonnes of cargo, an increase by 7.4 percent, y-o-y.
Growing the most in 2017 was Stockholm Arlanda where 185,3487 tonnes of cargo was handled, up 11.6 percent.
Behind the strong performance was the opening of a number of new long-haul flights including Singapore Airlines starting from May 2017, Air India starting from August and SAS with a new route to Miami by October 2017.
Another driver behind the growth at Stockholm Arlanda Airport was the steep rise in import e-shipments, handled by PostNord that has seen volumes rising to an average of 160,000 parcels per day, peaking at up to 250-300,000 parcels a day.
Contributing to the joint growth was also Gothenburg Airport that handled a total of 65099 tonnes of cargo, up 6.4 percent, while Malmo Airport saw volumes down by 14.2 percent to 24,677 tonnes in 2017.
Gothenburg Airport has seen a rising number of ad-hoc freighters in addition to a growth in belly cargo volumes, while Malmo Airport is still marked by the suspension of freighter services since November 15, 2016, when AirBridgeCargo Airlines moved its twice-weekly Boeing 747-8F Scandinavian operation from Malmo Airport to Oslo Airport.
Swedavia's cargo statistics comprise all cargo shipments handled at the airports, flown and trucked included.
