Feb 22, 2018 (newstodate): Magas Airport, in Russia's Caucasian Republic of Ingushetia, is soon to achieve international status.
The process with ICAO for certification of Magas Airport was started in 2015 to secure handling of international traffic which requires a comprehensive reconstruction of the existing facilities and infrastructure.
The upgrading has included the construction of a new passenger terminal, asphalting of the runway, a new taxiway system, and implementation of a new airfield lighting system.
Magas Airport now expects to achieve international status from April 2018 with the first flights to Kazakhstan and Turkey, aiming at adding flights to European destinations at a later stage.
A Soviet air force base until 1992, the airport is currently operating only scheduled flights to Moscow as well as Hajj flight operations.
