Feb 07, 2018 (newstodate): The Sharjah-based low-cost carrier Air Arabia is to add flights on a unique route to the Russian market.
Starting from April 2018, the carrier will be offering direct flight between Dubai and Grozny, the capital city of the Chechen Republic, Russia.
Grozny will also see the start of direct flights in April-May 2018 to Sochi, Rostov-on-Don and Simferopol, with the airline operator yet to be announced.
In 2017, plans were also announced for the opening of flights from Grozny to Istanbul, Munich and St Petersburg.
Grozny has long been rather isolated, and the only airline registered in the republic is Grozny Avia operating a fleet of six Yak-42 aircraft.
Granted its AOC in 2008, the carrier has however run into severe financial problems and is close to losing its AOC,
As for the Grozny Airport, a tender will soon be opened for the construction of design of a new airport passenger terminal to lift the airport's handling capacity to 1.5 mio annually reflecting aims to present the airport as a coming new hub in Russia's southeastern region.
