Dec 11, 2018 (newstodate): Finnair is among airlines currently sniffing at market potentials in flights to Chennai, in India.
According to Times of India, a delegation from Finnair has recently been visiting Chennai International Airport for negotiations about opening a new route from Helsinki.
Finnair has been operating flights on the route from Helsinki to Delhi since November 1, 2006, adding flights to Mumbai as its second destination in India on June 26, 2007, initially offering up to six weekly rotations but down to four per week when services were suspended from May, 2009, due to low demand during the slack season.
Already then, Finnair was considering opening a third Indian destination, Bangalore or Chennai, by the end of 2008 when the global financial crisis hit the aviation business and put all expansion plans on hold.
According to the Indian media, ANA and Alitalia have also approached Chennai International Airport that is today served only by British Airways and Lufthansa with direct non-stop routes from Europe.
