Dec 14, 2018 (newstodate): Once in a sustained up-turn, Iceland's passenger airlines are now adjusting to new tunes.
Neither Icelandair nor the low-cost operator WOW Air are in good financial shape, and both are forced to reconsider strategies after the recent unsuccessful attempt at merger.
WOW Air has now announced that the aircraft fleet will shrink from 20 to 11 aircraft, and all wide-body capacity will have to go, and as a result the seat capacity in 2019 may be more than halved.
The survival of WOW Air may, however, be secured by the acquisition of a stake in the carrier by Indigo that is also behind other airlines such as Wizz Air.
The attention is now on Icelandair that is also in need of capital, and it remains to be seen if the carrier will have the muscle to fill the gap left by the retraction of WOW Air.
