Dec 17, 2018 (newstodate): If everything falls into place, Norwegian seafood exporters will fill the first freighter to lift off from Eveness Airport for flights to China in 2019.
A key driver behind the project is the Norwegian company Pole Position Logistics aiming at launch of Boeing 777F or Boeing 747-400F operations at Evenes Airport, in the county's northernmost part close to the major whitefish and redfish production sites.
Participating in the Norway-China Seafood Summit in connection with the China Fisheries & Seafood Expo in Qingdao, November 6-9, Stig Winther, Pole Position Logistics, held negotiations with potential airlines to operate the freighter service to start from April 2019.
-Key to the process are long-term commitments from a leading Norwegian seafood exporter and a leading Chinese seafood importing company, and with Chinese operators the issue of Sibir overflight rights are solved as well, says Mr Winther.
-We are now talking to the handling agent at Eveness Airport, Wideroe, and the coming traffic will require sufficient terminal facilities as well as pertinent GSE equipment which can be solved as well.
-For a start we plan for two weekly rotations to Beijing of Shanghai by two individual carriers, and the development will prove needs for future expansion.
-Supporting the coming freighter service that will reduce total lead-times from production sites to Beijing or Shanghai to just 10-15 hours will be also the start from July 2, 2019, of a direct railway cargo service with twice-weekly departures from Narvik to Malmo, in Sweden, to carry seafood shipments for onward transportation by air from Copenhagen Airport or by trucks on the highway system over the Oeresund Bridge through Denmark to continental airports such as Frankfurt, Amsterdam and other hubs.
-In case of an AOG affecting the Eveness freighter service, the rail cargo service will provide a back-up that will still be competitive against the existing road feeder services from northern Norway into Oslo Airport, says Mr Winther.
