Dec 12, 2018 (newstodate): China has grand plans for expansion of its airports infrastructure to cope with a huge increase in air traffic.
According to Chinese media, the country plans to almost double the number of airports by 2035, from today's 234 civilian airports to 450 by 2035, including also the construction of several regional air transport hubs.
In 2017, 552 million passengers were handled at Chinese airports, and forecasts predict that this figure will increase to 720 million passengers by 2020 as China overtakes USA.
Among China's new upcoming airports is Beijing Daxing International Airport, the Chinese capital's new multi-billion-dollar aviation hub slated to open in September 2019.
When completed, the airport will be the world's largest airport with a total of seven runways to accommodate 620,000 flights and handling some 100 million passengers annually.
