Nov 14, 2018 (newstodate): Kazakhstan is to become the first country in the CIS region to achieve certification of its capital airport to ICAO IIIB status for both runways.
By the end of October 2018, Almaty International Airport completed reconstruction of its second 4,500 runway, in addition to new taxiways and airfield and runway lighting systems required to attain the new operational status.
Already in 2011, the airport achieved CAT IIIB status of the other 4,400m runway, and both runways can now be operated under adverse weather conditions, alleviating the need for redirecting traffic to alternate airports.
