Nov 28, 2018 (newstodate): Star Alliance member-airline Adria Airways' decision to select the Russian Superjet 100 for its future mid-range aircraft took the industry by some surprise.
Only the second European operator to chose the Superjet 100 over western-built alternatives, Adria Airways will take 15 aircraft on a long-term lease contract, with deliveries to start from 2019 already.
The first European operator of the Superjet, Ireland-based CityJet has eight Superjet 100 in the fleet with orders for a further eight aircraft.
Three of the Superjet 100 aircraft are on a lease contract with Brussels Airlines that has, however, decided not to prolong the contract after expiry in 2019, citing challenging maintenance issues behind the decision.
Another operator, the Mexican airline InterJet is also operating 22 Superjet 100 aircraft, several of which are grounded or partly cannibalized to serve as a spares reservoir due to insufficient maintenance support from Sukhoi.
The new contact with Adria Airways thus comprises also the joint setting up of a Superjet maintenance center at Ljubljana Airport.
-We realize that the Superjet 100 after-sales support at the entry to the European market must be organized profoundly and professionally. Together with Adria Airways we will create a joint maintenance and repair organization for the SSJ100 at Ljubljana Airport.
-That service platform will secure the operational reliability of the Superjet 100 aircraft in Europe, Sukhoi says in a release on the deal with Adria Airways.
