Oct 05, 2018 (newstodate): Latvia's Liepaja Airport is seeing convincing growth in passenger volumes in 2018.
In September, the number of passengers through the airport was thus up 41 percent, y-o-y, thanks to the short-haul route to the country's hub at Riga Airport.
Operating the route is airBaltic with three weekly rotations using Bombardier Q400 aircraft.
Talks are now being conducted between the airport and airBaltic for increasing the frequency to six weekly rotations in the summer 2019 schedule.
Plans are also being aired for the opening by Belavia of a route between Liepaja and Minsk, the capital of Belarus, complementing, or replacing, the airline's current flights between Minsk and Palanga, on the Lithuanian Baltic coast, 72 km from Liepaja.
Following the completion of the long process of airport reconstruction works and certification, Liepaja Airport, 210 km west of Riga, was reopened for non-commercial aviation services from May 26, 2016, and fully open for regular commercial traffic from September 19 - but restricted to summer traffic only.
So far, the only carrier with scheduled flights at Liepaja Airport remains airBaltic that returned domestic flights between Riga and Liepaja from May 16, 2017.
airBaltic first opened the domestic route from Riga on September 5, 2005, bringing domestic flights back to Latvia with four weekly flights, but the operations were since suspended for a decade.
