Oct 08, 2018 (newstodate): Latvia and Japan have agreed to continue work on a coming new air services agreement.
As one step in this process, a protocol between Latvia's Transport Ministry and Japan's Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry will enhance cooperation in aviation including possibilities for launch of direct flights between both countries.
Latvia has long worked for a direct air link between Riga and Japan. In 2013 Latvia's Prime Minister visited Japan and was in talks with both ANA and JAL to raise interest in potentials for launching air traffic between Latvia and Japan.
Japan Air Lines has also been a frequent summer guest at Riga Airport with Boeing 747 charter flights since 2009, but so far the closest Riga has come to regular flights to Japan is through Finnair's code-sharing its flights between Helsinki and Riga with Japan Air Lines starting from July 12 2014
