Oct 10, 2018 (newstodate): Plans for construction of a new hangar at the Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport are still high on the wishing-list.
First aired by Atlantic Airways earlier this year, the plan has gained in actuality as the carrier has now signed lease contracts for not just one, but now two new Airbus A320neo aircraft with the first to be delivered in Q1, 2019, and the second to follow one yer later.
The wingspan of the A320neo is 1.7m longer than the A320 aircraft now used by Atlantic Airways, requiring a larger dimension of hangar that currently available.
But a new hangar would also provide more space for the carrier's current technical servicing of three Airbus aircraft including two A320-200 and one A319-100, plus two helicopters.
-We are in discussions with Vagar Airport about the hangar project and its financing. No decision has yet been made, but both parties agree on the basic need for a new facility, Johanna a Berghi, Atlantic Airways CEO, told newstodate in June 2018.
A decision has, however, still not been made.
-We are in talks with the airport about the issue of a new hangar, and while a decision has long been pending, my hope now is to see a final decision by the parties to be reached before the end of this month, with a new hangar in place in 2019 - preferably before summer, but at least as soon as possible, says Ms a Berghi.
-It remains to be decided if Atlantic Airways will own or lease the facility, and if leased: at which cost, but all issues will soon be settled.
