Oct 17, 2018 (newstodate): Simferopol Airport can be thankful for Russia's annexation of the Crimean peninsula in 2014.
Massive investments have been channeled into expanding and renovating the airport that opened a modern passenger terminal in 2016, designed by a South Korean architecture and engineering firm, while other pertinent airport infrastructure has been renovated as well.
Now plans are underway for renovating the airport's second runway aiming at CAT IIIA certification once the works are completed.
The renovated runway is slated for commissioning before the end of 2019, extended from 2,700m to 3,200m and allowing the airport to handle all types of aircraft excluding only the Airbus A380 at this stage while plans are actually prepared for expanding also to accommodate this aircraft type at a later date - if needs arise...
Since March 2014, all flights to and from Simferopol Airport with the exception of flights originating from Russia have been cancelled due to Crimea's disputed status.
