Oct 18, 2018 (newstodate): It seems to be a wise strategy of Copenhagen Airport to base its cargo development on belly freight, rather than freighter volumes.
During the first nine months of this year, the airport handled a total of 206,415 tonnes of cargo, excluding volumes on integrators - a decline by 4.2 percent, y-o-y.
Statistics show that volumes on freighters was down 20.3 percent to 38,086 tonnes, mail volumes dropped 5.9 percent to 18,202 tonnes, and trucked cargo was also down 6.4 percent, to 58,246 tonnes during the period.
Only cargo carried in passenger aircraft belly holds increased in January-September 2018, to 91,881 tonnes, up 6.8 percent.
The airport has thus decided to facilitate the opening of a new 20,000 sq m cargo center, optimistically slated for commissioning already in 2020, to be designed by the German developer AXXUS Capital and aiming at enhancing the handling of belly cargo shipments.
Announced by the end of 2017, the airport has however yet to find a cargo handling company interested in operating the cargo center as well as seeing other cargo companies interested in leasing parts of the planned production and office premises.
With only a year to go, the project has still to break ground.
