Last new carrier airing intentions of setting up traffic from China to Helsinki is the low-cost airline Juneyao Airlines, set up in 2005 as a subsidiary of Shanghai JuneYao Group with first operations from September 2006.
According to media reports, the carrier intends to start flights on the route from Shanghai to Helsinki from June 2019, with Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
Earlier, other Chinese carriers including the low-cost operator Tibet Airlines sought rights to start flights from Jinan to Helsinki from March 2018, and the HNA Group subsidiary Lucky Air also applied to CAAC for rights to open a route from Kunming to Helsinki in 2018, scheduled for start of operations from January 17, 2018 - which also did not happen..
Before that, China's Beijing Capital Airlines announced plans for Finland, aiming to start flights from Beijing to Helsinki, starting from May 2017 - and also never showed up.
All along, Finnair has developed a strong offer for flights between Finland and China, celebrating in 2018 its 30th anniversary of its first China-bound flight.
The carrier is now operating 38 weekly flights from Helsinki to six destinations in China - Beijing from June 2, 1988, Shanghai from September 2003, Chongqing from May 9, 2012, Xian from June 14, 2013, Nanjing from May 13, 2018, and Guangzhou from September 2, 2005, as well as to Hong Kong from May 19, 2007.
